The United Kingdom was rocked by news of the firing of Conservative Party Chairman, Nadhim Zahawi, by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The dismissal came as a result of an ethics investigation into Zahawi's personal tax arrangements. The investigation revealed a "serious breach of the Ministerial Code," which led to Zahawi's removal from his position in the government.
Zahawi faced criticism for not declaring a £4.8 million ($5.96 million) settlement he made with tax officials, following allegations of a tax dispute. This settlement came as a shock to the public, particularly given the current cost-of-living crisis many Britons are facing.
Zahawi was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in July of 2022 and served in the Cabinet under Johnson and his successor, Liz Truss. He continued in this role under Sunak, who eventually made him party chairman. However, the findings of the ethics investigation led to his removal from the government.
In a letter to Zahawi, Prime Minister Sunak stated that the investigation revealed a serious breach of the Ministerial Code and that he had informed Zahawi of his decision to remove him from his position in the government. This decision was met with criticism from the opposition Labour Party, who claimed that Sunak should have dismissed Zahawi when the claims were first reported, instead of launching an investigation.
Senior Labour lawmaker Bridget Phillipson spoke out about the situation, calling Sunak a "weak" leader and stating that "the stench of sleaze just hangs around the Conservative party." Sunak himself has faced scrutiny over the tax arrangements of his wife, Akshata Murty, the daughter of an Indian billionaire. In 2022, Sunak and Murty appeared on the Sunday Times Rich List of the UK's 250 wealthiest people, with a joint net worth estimated at £730 million ($826 million).
Last year it was revealed that Murty had enjoyed "non-domicile" status in the UK, which allowed her to legally avoid paying UK taxes on her foreign earnings from her family's Infosys business group. Additionally, Sunak was fined by police for attending lockdown-breaking parties held on UK government premises and for failing to wear a seatbelt while riding in a car.
In a letter responding to his dismissal, Zahawi stated that it had been the privilege of his life to serve in successive UK governments. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has had and stated that he believes his story would not have been possible in any other country. Zahawi was born in Iraq to Kurdish parents and came to the UK as a child, when his family fled Saddam Hussein's regime. He is believed to be one of the richest politicians in the House of Commons and helped found the polling company YouGov.
The firing of Nadhim Zahawi and the investigation into his tax arrangements have sparked a new wave of criticism towards the Conservative Party and the current government. The public is calling for accountability, professionalism, and integrity at every level, which were promises made by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak when he entered 10 Downing Street. The situation has led to a further examination of the tax arrangements of those in positions of power and has brought to light the need for transparency and accountability in government.
