Mocking the rich with the help of art is not new, but in recent years the so-called crime fiction, a la Knives Out or White Lotus, has gained great interest and popularity. Maybe we're drawn to them for fun (okay, Tanya's Jennifer Coolidge and Benoit Blanc's express selling points); While we can't bring Elon Musks from all over the world to justice in real life, watching them torture each other on vacation or confront each other over inheritances can give you a little sense of revenge. In these stories, those who exploit others or cut off their wealth actually get what they deserve. In the triangle of grief, Swedish director Ruben Östlund takes this to the extreme.
The winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and now a contender for best film at the Oscars, does not embarrass its rich and beautiful characters - it pushes them into the most miserable and embarrassing situations. (The action takes place on a cruise ship and an uninhabited island). The film follows the husband and wife of powerful models Yaya (Charlbi Dean Creek) and Carla (Harris Dixon) as they take a free cruise on a dilapidated luxury yacht. (If you have a weak gag reflex, don't try after a full meal.)
The outrageous drama is nominated for several Oscars this year, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Östlund. However, breakout star Dolly De Leon was duped by criminals for her supporting role. When you get to the third act, you'll see what's missing from the Academy.
Triangle of Sorrow is not yet available for streaming, but it is available to rent and purchase on platforms such as Prime Video and Apple TV+. Check out the options below.
